During the epidemic, we have experienced first-hand how important the “dirty job” that is so often despised by the society is when the cleaners are not on duty; when the government announced the closure of schools and various institutions, it was the paid and unpaid housework caregivers who are taking care of those in need; front-line workers such as restaurants and takeaways never rested for a single day, and kept everyone fed. The demand for sex work has never stopped during the epidemic. On other days, social workers, social advocates, community workers, etc. fight for the public to promote social change for close to nothing.
Have you ever wondered what is the price of their labour?
Jobs such as care work and manual labour are often considered “unskilled” and “inferior” jobs, and their contribution to society has been devalued or even denied. Out of this negative attitude is as set of social systems that push these working people to the margin in terms of social status, economy, welfare, labour security, and self-recognition.
When we realise that society depends on the efforts of these invisible and despised workers from top to bottom, is it time to face up to their labour? And as “marginal workers”, if our labour is not valued, if our livelihood is not guaranteed, how can we continue?
This sharing session will invite “marginal workers” from different sectors to share their experiences and thoughts: only when we start to correctly revalue their labour do we have the power to continue to promote change.
