When we talk about the concept of "god", we would rarely indicate the male gender, but the word "goddess", is forever branded with the female gender "female", as all gods are supposed to be male, and "goddesses" are but minorities and exceptions. The (male) gods in different cultures and religions have formidable strength and abilities, and they are in charge of most of the things that “matters”: war, technology, and many more. God creates, God punishes, God forgives, God saves mankind. And on the opposite end are the goddesses. They are often assigned supportive roles, or exist as partners to the (male) gods. They are in charge of less important areas, mostly things related to women, such as love, marriage, childbirth, etc.
But do gods have gender? How did ancient people understand the gender of gods? Why the gendered division of labor? What was the historical and cultural context of a certain myth? What gender concepts do the myths reflect, and how do they shape our gender concepts?
We have invited Professor Nicholas Chan and KY Wong to join us in this interdisciplinary conversation, to re-examine the many different images of goddesses in different cultures - from Nv Wa, Lilith, to Medusa - their origins, evolutions, and feminist potentiality.
Thanks to the kind support of Aesop to our program, participants of this session can bring home a special gift from Aesop, to nourish your body and mind! First-come-first-served basis while stocks last.
Speakers:
Dr. Nicholas L. Chan (Associate Professor, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, CUHK)
KY Wong (Artist & Curator)
Moderator: Sonia Wong (Founder of Reel Women HK & Co-Founder of WFHK & Gender Studies Scholar)
