Poya Miao, one of the first-ever openly lesbian council members of Taiwan, is a member of the Social Democratic Party in Taipei City. She ran for the city council for the first time in 2015 because she joined the Social Democratic Party in the process of its formation. Poya represented the Social Democratic Party in Taipei city electoral district in participating in elections for legislature. At that time, she gained 21,000 votes, 12.1% of the vote, the most successful of any candidate that was non-Blue and non-Green.
Before that, Poya was a social movement worker in the Taiwan Alliance to End the Death Penalty, beginning from the judicial reform movement. That was her third formal job after entering society. Before that, she worked in the legal profession in a rather traditional manner, in a lawyer’s office helping with cases related to the tech companies. This came from personal interest, as well as that she graduated from the Department of Law at National Taiwan University.
